Newly released figures from merseyflow show that over 6.82 million residents, commuters and visitors crossed the River Mersey in Halton between April and June 2026.
Over 2.2 million vehicles are consistently making the journey over the bridges each month, with a record 95% of drivers choosing to pay for their crossings using automated or digital payment methods.
The newly released quarterly figures from merseyflow include trips made across the Mersey Gateway Bridge and the Silver Jubilee Bridge, both of which are covered by the same merseyflow toll/charging system. They cover April – June 2026, and show:
- TRAFFIC LEVELS CONSISTENTLY EXCEEDING TWO MILLION JOURNEYS EACH MONTH – 2.31 million journeys were made over the Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee Bridges in June 2026, making it the busiest June on record
- OVER 83,000 VEHICLES USE THE BRIDGES EVERY WEEKDAY – with over 83% of vehicles using the Mersey Gateway Bridge to cross the river
- MORE CUSTOMERS CHOOSING TO REGISTER WITH MERSEYFLOW AND USE THE AUTO-TOP UP SYSTEM THAN EVER – shown by a record 95% of customers using digital or automated payment methods.
- PCNs STAY CONSISTENT AS A PERCENTAGE OF OVERALL JOURNEYS – 97.9% of journeys were paid for on time
Mike Bennett, Managing Director of the Mersey Gateway Crossings Board, said: “We’re now consistently seeing traffic volumes over the two million vehicles mark every month, a trend that is likely to continue as we head into our typically busier summer and autumn period.”
“We’re always looking for ways to make it easier for people to pay for their crossings. The new updates brought in by merseyflow mean drivers can access and manage their accounts more quickly and efficiently, whether they’re regular commuters or only use the bridges occasionally.”
Neil Conway, Chief Executive of merseyflow, said: “For local residents and regular users, we’ve made it simpler to handle different payment scenarios. If you have a Local User Discount Scheme (LUDS) plan and need to pay for a business crossing, you can now log into your LUDS plan and select the crossings you want to pay for.”
“You can now log in to the merseyflow Quick Pay App using face or fingerprint ID for faster access, and you can add multiple vehicles to a Pay As You Go account so everything is managed in one place. We’ve also introduced self-serve Authorised Account Representative (AAR) management, so customers can nominate multiple authorised representatives to help manage their account via the merseyflow website. If you already have an AAR on your account, you’ll need to re-nominate them so they can continue to support you.”

The quarterly merseyflow dashboard provides a range of in-depth statistics and graphs which show information on the number of crossings made, average daily traffic, number of PCNs issued, methods of payment, payments made on time, total revenue, and what percentage of this comes from PCNs.
