Merseyflow extends support for local rugby union club for a third year

Local rugby union club ‘The Wids’ is looking forward to the start of a new season after an 18-month break with the added boost of an extended sponsorship deal with toll bridge operator merseyflow.

Widnes Rugby Union Club has been unable to play for over a year during lockdown and is gearing up for its return to the pitch on 4th September, facing off against newly-promoted Burnley at home.

The club is at the heart of the sporting community in Widnes and relies solely on donations and funding. For a third year, its sponsorship deal with merseyflow will help the club to cover some of its day to day running costs. The extension means merseyflow’s ‘Proud to be backing The Wids’ banner will be a feature on the side of the main stand at its Heath Road ground throughout the 2021-22 season.

Neil Conway, Chief Executive of merseyflow, said: “Supporting the communities in Widnes and Runcorn is really important to merseyflow and we’re proud to support The Wids for another year. After over a year in lockdown, clubs like The Wids play an important role in helping local people to manage their physical and mental health. We’re looking forward to watching a match or two and wish the team good luck in the upcoming season.”

Widnes RUFC President Martin Griffiths said “We are delighted that merseyflow have agreed to support our club once again. Following the difficulties of the past 18 months, their sponsorship will help us to "build back better" as we make a welcome return to competitive rugby.
